If you’ve been thinking about getting a Tesla Model Y, now might be the perfect time—but only if you hurry.
Tesla’s legacy Model Y—the version that’s topped global sales charts—is officially selling out across the U.S., with 29 states already out of inventory.
That’s because Tesla has now shifted its focus to delivering the all-new version of the Model Y, and the old design is no longer being produced.
What’s Going On With the Legacy Model Y?
With the arrival of the new Model Y Launch Series, Tesla has begun phasing out the previous generation of its all-electric crossover. The legacy version is no longer in production, so what you see in inventory is the last batch ever made.
And they’re going fast.
According to Tesla tracker Sawyer Merritt, the legacy Model Y is completely sold out in states like:
- Texas
- Ohio
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Virginia
- North Carolina
- Utah
- Alabama, and many more.
If you’re in one of these 29 states, your only option might be to buy the newer model—unless you’re willing to travel to a nearby state with remaining stock.

Tesla Is Offering Big Discounts on the Legacy Model Y
To clear out inventory and make room for the new version, Tesla is offering more than $5,000 off some of the remaining legacy Model Ys.
Yes, you read that right: $5,000+ off for one of the most popular electric vehicles ever sold.
So while it may not be the latest model, the legacy Model Y is still a great buy, packed with Tesla’s powerful EV tech, excellent range, and sleek design.
What’s Different in the New Model Y?
Tesla has started delivering its Launch Series of the new Model Y, which comes with:
- Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability
- Premium interior upgrades
- Exclusive badging
- Smoother design and build improvements
But for now, this version is only available as a higher-priced trim. Lower-cost Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) and All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) versions aren’t available yet—and they may not be until Tesla clears out more of the older models.
Why That Matters for Buyers Right Now
If you’re on a budget, the legacy Model Y might be your best shot at owning a Tesla without breaking the bank.
Once those remaining units are gone, you’ll either have to wait for Tesla to release cheaper trims of the new version… or pay more for the Launch Series, which includes FSD whether you want it or not.
So, Should You Buy the Legacy Model Y?
Here’s the deal:
- It’s a proven vehicle, with millions of satisfied drivers
- It’s currently on sale with rare Tesla discounts
- It still includes top-tier EV tech and features
- And… it won’t be available for much longer
