If you own a Tesla with Full Self-Driving (FSD), you’re in for some great news! Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will upgrade FSD customers from Hardware 3 to Hardware 4—for free.

But there’s a catch. Musk admits the upgrade won’t be easy and could take time. So why is Tesla making this move now? And what does it mean for current Tesla owners?

Let’s dive into the details of this exciting announcement and what it means for the future of Tesla’s self-driving technology.

Tesla owners who purchased the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package will get a free upgrade from Hardware 3 to Hardware 4, according to Elon Musk. He confirmed this during a recent earnings call.

Tesla Confirms Free Upgrades for FSD Users

During Tesla’s Q4 and Full-Year 2024 earnings call, a retail investor asked if Tesla would need to upgrade Hardware 3 vehicles and what impact this might have on the company’s costs.

Investor’s Question:

“Will Tesla need to upgrade Hardware 3 vehicles? If so, what is the timeline and how will it affect Tesla’s capital expenses?”

In response, Elon Musk openly admitted that the upgrade is necessary and reassured customers that Tesla will cover the cost.

“The honest answer is that we’ll need to upgrade Hardware 3 computers for those who bought Full Self-Driving. That’s the truth. It’s going to be painful and difficult, but we’ll get it done. Honestly, I’m kind of glad not that many people bought the FSD package,” Musk said.

Tesla Still Supporting Hardware 3

Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer, Vaibhav Taneja, also addressed concerns about Hardware 3. He emphasized that Tesla is still releasing software updates for the system, even as it moves forward with Hardware 4.

“We recently released version 12.6, which is like a smaller version of V13 but still a big improvement. Engineers are finding ways to make larger models work on smaller systems. So, we’re not abandoning Hardware 3—we’re still improving it, though it will lag behind Hardware 4 updates,” Taneja explained.

What This Means for Tesla Owners

For Tesla owners with Full Self-Driving, this means a free hardware upgrade, ensuring their vehicles stay up to date with the latest advancements. While the process may take time and effort, Tesla remains committed to improving the FSD experience for all customers.
